So much comes to mind as i (and we) pack, and unpack every 3-4 years on avg the past 20+yrs. i am ready for it to be done as we settled in a new place we really like on the Pacific Northwest, but your post is a reminder that life is ever-changing, and who knows if we may decide to move back to Asia when the kids are in college. Travel lighter. Live lighter. And reading the part when you clean Zach's room.. i see myself in 5 years, and 11 yrs. wait- you haven't talked about the digital trail, dealing with all those photos, yet!

The photos are all still there, my most vivid document of his childhood!

Another delightful, beautifully written, and this time quite touching piece. Don’t forget us while you are in Singapore William.

Thank you, Wendy!

1) yow, that can’t be right

2) safe travels

3) for whatever it’s worth, AARP memberships are open to anyone, the member discounts are great, and the monthly cover profiles are a cheering reminder that people older than me are old now. If you join too I’m pretty sure we could take them.

Don’t think I haven’t been tempted by the AARP. I can be a little kiasu.

Good luck with the move Will! And thanks for sharing.

Sumptuously written, as usual! Loved every word. We did the same back in ‘22 with the London move — more than validating the old maxim that the three most traumatic life events are death, divorce, and moving.

Very relatable post! I have a 2008-birn kid as well who graduated high school this week. And we are leaving Beijing after seven years here through COVID. No attic or garage, but a big enough apartment to accumulate a ton of crap. Kid agonising over what to study in uni, and is excited for a change.

I have no family connection to Singoapore, but to retire there is my dream. Proabbly will never have enough money to do that though 🤣 All thr best to you in the new chapter of your life and to your son as well.

I loved this post so much. Wishing you every good thing in Singapore, Will!

Thanks, Rick! We'll miss RWC, but I reckon we'll be back.

Excellent post. Many laughs, and oh, yes, the Chinese aversion to booking a loss! If only those Enron shares had come with certificates, you could probably sell them now on eBay for a decent sum!

As for that middle-aged Chinese guy, he probably turned that Peranakan pottery around at Christie's or Sotheby's for tens of thousands.

Are the squirrels throwing a party?

I prefer to think they'll pine for me during my absence.

Pine tree, that is.

I so enjoyed reading this. Had at least two laugh-out-loud moments. Will be in your shoes soon. Logan turns 18 in 3 years! NS here we come. PS - nope not sure what or where hubs and I will be … best not to think about that…

Let me know if you're in Singapore! I'll be mostly in Taiwan due to work, but spending a lot of time there.
